1. When to plant?

For example, if you are growing it in January then you will find its first frost occurs around the middle of the month July or August then you will see the turmeric between the middle of October or November. If you have a longer growing season or any indoor place to grow it then time is less important. But you will still get greater results if you plant in winter.

2. Obtain Rhizomes

Turmeric is propagated by the use of rhizomes which are fleshy roots. These are available for purchase at any local grocery food store in winters. Most Asian groceries are also likely to have it in stock for those who can’t get their hands on the fresh turmeric rhizomes; they can also buy it from the online stores.

3. How to plant?

If you are ready to plant turmeric then you will need a 14 to 18 inch pot for each 6 to 8 inches of rhizome, including enough potting soil to fill it. To start with you have to put rhizomes in smaller containers and then transplant into the largest container when they start growing well. Here’s how to do it.

  • Firstly you need to cut rhizomes into sections.
  • Fill 3 inch pots with a good potting soil.
  • Put the rhizomes flat over the soil and cover it with the potting soil.
  • Water it well and slip the pots into plastic bags.
  • Now place the pots into the warmest place where temperature is about 86 to 95 degrees.
