A guide to keeping the mushroom fresh and healthy

Are you fed up that your mushroom gets rooted and unhealthy after 1 or 2 days of purchasing them? Do you want to know some methods by which you can preserve your mushroom for more days and keep them fresh and healthy?

In this article, we will tell you some of the practices which will help you in keeping the mushrooms fresh, so that you can be able to use them in the future. So let’s find out.

How long does mushroom last?

Mushroom is a vegetable that is preferred by most people because of the nutritional value and flavor it adds to the meal. Mushrooms are perishable vegetables as they are losing their color and nutrition from day one at room temperature.

On humid and hot days, mushrooms only last for 12 hours only at room temperature. Therefore, people like to store them in the fridge so that they can last up to many days.

How can we preserve mushrooms for a longer period?

If you want to enjoy this vegetable for a longer time and add them to your meals, then here are some of the methods that you can try to preserve them:

  1. Storing the mushroom at the right temperature Mushrooms are perishable and if they didn’t get the required temperature, then they won’t be able to survive for a longer period. The best temperature to store the mushrooms is 40-45 degrees Celsius and the refrigerator is the best choice to store them.
  2. Storing mushroom in a paper bag with a damp towel To store them properly and to increase their shelf life, many people place the mushrooms in the paper bag with a damp paper towel and then refrigerate them. If you place them without the paper bag, then the mushrooms will dry out as the paper bag absorbs its moisture.
  3. Using a ziplock bag to store the mushrooms Ziplocks plastic bags are beneficial for the storage of mushroom as it helps them to retain the mushroom. If you place the mushrooms directly in the fridge, then it will lead to a loss of moisture in them. One thing to keep in mind is that the ziplock plastic bag should partially open for the circulation of air as it gets completely closed then mushrooms will be spoiled quickly.

What are the common mistakes people should avoid regarding mushrooms?

  • Do not buy the packed mushroom as prefer buying the mushrooms in loose so that you can get only the quantity which you want. It will help you to minimize the need to store the mushroom in the refrigerator.
  • Choose the whole mushroom rather than sliced mushrooms. Sliced mushrooms get perish quickly.
  • It’s better to go for organic rather than stored ones. If you know any place where you can get fresh and organic mushrooms then buy this vegetable from that place.
  • Don’t wash the mushroom as it will decrease the moisture and the shelf life of the mushrooms.
  • Always allow your mushroom to breathe as avoid storing them in a seal-tight container.
