Why seeds don’t sprout: 6 probable reasons for seed failures

It is truly disappointing when you sow your seeds with excitement, but you failed to see its growth. You might encounter many problems with having seedlings, but what are the reasons behind it?

Luckily, it is very easy for you to know the root cause because you have landed on the right page. Here, we will discuss the main causes or probable reasons for seed failures.

Weather/Climate changes cause poor germination of seeds

One of the first reasons you have to check environmental changes and issues. These problems are often more likely to cause germination issues. Determining the climate changes while sowing seeds is very crucial. The key points of germination are water they get, oxygen they receive, and temperature.

Six Probable reasons for seed failures

  1. Less Water
Water is a highly essential factor for seeds to germinate properly. When the seeds mature, they dry out. To ensure the germination process, one must water the plants at an adequate level. The mature needs more water so the growth can take place.

Moreover, seeds often require water to coat and break down, which helps in the emergence of seedlings. If you are not following the watering methods, this may turn into poor germination of seeds.
  2. Excess of water
As you can see, water is super essential for seedlings. So it doesn’t mean you just go beyond the expectation. If you watered too little or too much of the seeds- it affects the growth of the plant.

However, over watering plants you may not recover the things as we did in too less water. So be careful or note down the water time or more you need to enjoy the proper germination process.
  3. Lack of oxygen
While germinating seeds, oxygen is highly needed for the metabolism and photosynthesis process. However, oxygen is linked with water requirements. The coatings of seeds have to be broken before they absorb water and oxygen from the environment.

When your plants get both less and excess water they do not get enough oxygen for the germination. Over watering may cause damage to soil that makes it difficult for oxygen to go through the process.

Besides watering, a buried seed too deep is also a major reason that may affect oxygen. Also, the wrong medium of growing seeds and soil affect the seed germination.
  4. Low temperature
Another major reason for poor seed germination is- growing seeds under too low temperature. Seeds generally germinate at certain temperatures. Sometimes seeds do not germinate under certain temperatures.

Many common crops require the temperature (60-75 degrees F). However, you have to personally check all the seeds, crops and more to know the suitable temperature for its growth.

Remember successfully growing seeds depends upon the right temperature, light, water, and seed quality you have put into it.
  5. High Temperature
Similar to water, Too low and too high temperature affects the seed germination process. If you are trying to germinate seeds, then one must check the temperature during the winter and summer season.

The ideal temperature of seed germination is 60-75 degree F. So make sure to follow the whole things. Also remember, if you are growing seeds in too hot weather then keep it cool too by adding ventilation sources.
  6. Damping off
If you successfully germinated the seed and soon after they died this is a problem of damping off. Damping off states a condition when seedlings fail to emerge at all. This problem is most seen in early indoor gardening or in a greenhouse. Further, it can cause a number of different soil-borne fungi or fungus like organisms.
